What is Joomla?

Joomla is a Content Management System. Commonly called a CMS. It is sort of like a site builder, only far more powerful.

There are many professionals who work with Joomla, so you can usually find help. It is also an award winner - so lots of people really like it.

If there is something you want your site to do, chances are, Joomla can do it. It is "modular", which means that if it cannot do something now, you can usually find an extension which plugs into Joomla to make it do more. Like Legos.

It is important to understand that Joomla does not work with a "page" structure. People tend to think in a matter of Pages. Joomla does not. It thinks in Content. And Content can have many kinds. Pages are automatically created for you, depending on what kind of content it is, and how it needs to be displayed. If you create the content in the right way, Joomla pretty much takes care of everything else.

Some parts of your content are not found in the Articles. Contacts are a good example of this. Contacts are found under Components -> Contacts. That gets you to the Contact Manager, which is set up just for handling contacts. You can use that to create a single contact form, or to create a category of contacts for Sales, Support, Tech, etc.

Joomla also handles site permissions. You can restrict certain things so only a certain group of people can see them. You can assign other people to help you in the backend of the site (where all the management work is done), and you can choose what they can do too.

There is a learning curve. You can figure out how to do a lot of things just by playing around. Look all you like - you can't hurt anything if you don't hit SAVE!
